Is it better to paint a wall using a sprayer or a roller? If you’ve asked yourself this mid-renovation, you’re not alone. I’m Lena Taylor from Flipping Gorgeous, and in today’s post, I’m breaking down my real-life experience during week four of a major bathroom renovation—testing both methods so you don’t have to.

First Impressions with the Paint Sprayer
I kicked things off using the Wagner sprayer—what I call the ‘big boy’—for the bathroom’s fresh drywall. After thinning the paint properly (about a cup of water per batch), I started spraying from the top down in horizontal motions. My approach was to create a perimeter before filling in. With 11-foot ceilings and limited reach, this method helped me get an even coat quickly.
🟢 Pros:
– Super fast coverage
– Easy on the body
– Great for fresh, unfinished spaces
🔴 Cons:
– Major overspray
– Prep and cleanup time
– Not ideal for rooms with finished trim or floors

Switching to the Roller for the Second Coat
After running into issues with dust and overspray (thanks to unfinished floors), I switched to a traditional roller for the second coat. While it took more physical effort and time (about an hour and a half for one wall), it offered better control and less mess.
🟢 Pros:
– Precise application
– No need to thin the paint
– Easier cleanup
🔴 Cons:
– Takes longer
– Physically demanding
– Less fun (especially if you hate painting like I do!)
My Verdict
If you’re working with brand new construction or unfinished spaces, a sprayer can save serious time and strain on your body. But if you’re painting in a finished room or need more control, the roller is your best bet. Either way, be prepared for some sweat equity—but that pride you feel afterward? Totally worth it.
Why I DIY Anyway
Sure, my husband said we could hire someone. But I wanted to get my hands dirty—literally. Not just to save money (which we did—around $1,500!), but to walk into this room later and know I played a big part in bringing it to life. As a mom of three, homemaker, and entrepreneur, it’s empowering to know I can contribute with my own two hands.
